Ag21 Scouting Program
Great Bend Co-op’s Ag21 Scouting Program offers our customers an in-house option for crop consulting. We have six crop production specialists on staff. Christa Milton is located at our Radium location. Chris Staub is based out of our Seward branch. Scott Nienke and Leroy Tiemeyer are located out of our Great Bend Fertilizer location. Marvin Pipes is based at our Ellinwood branch. Ron Fritschen is located at our Russell location.
Our Ag 21 Consulting and Scouting Program provides the grower with a weekly or bi-weekly check of the crop, a written report and discussion with our agronomist, recommendations for pest and weed control, soil and tissue sample, crop planning, and much more. Visit our Agronomy page to learn more.
Fall Wheat Management
Wheat in the area is really starting to take off growing. While some areas are experiencing dry conditions that are slowing growth, others are sitting in great moisture.
Now is the time to be scouting wheat for moisture (if irrigated), newly emerging broadleaf weeds and grasses, and fall armyworm or cutworm damage.
Fall is the best time to get control of cheat in wheat. Smaller cheat that has not over-wintered is much more susceptible to herbicides. Olympus and PowerFlex are great options in conventional wheat. Beyond is also very effective, but only safe on Clearfield wheat.
2020 Crop Planning
Now is the best time to start planning for the 2020 crop season. Seed and agronomy inputs can be prepaid at some very significant discounts over spring pricing. NRCS Programs
NRCS Programs like Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) and Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) are currently accepting applications. The deadline for these programs is typically set in December. Start the process by speaking with our Conservation Agronomy Specialist today to find out what program might best fit your operation.
Utilizing 2019 Tissue Samples for 2020 Decisions
We pulled a record number of tissue tests in the 2019 growing season. While these tests are very useful in making in-season decisions, they can also prove extremely beneficial in planning for 2020.
Looking at your tissue tests, determine which nutrients you are lacking and implement a plan to increase availability of those nutrients for your 2020 crop. Some micronutrients tend to be more beneficial from a foliar, in-season application, but many of the macronutrients may be applied PRE-Plant and save some expense in-season.
Pulling tissue samples in 2020 can help determine if we are gaining in the fight against nutrient deficiency.
