Application Technician Program
The Application Technician Program is a new initiative to help potential candidates understand that there are rewarding, great paying careers in agriculture that may not require a traditional four-year college degree. Through this program, we will provide in-depth, in-house training to anyone who wants to pursue a career as a commercial applicator. This structured program provides the necessary machinery, crop, and chemical training to set you up for success. We also provide in-house CDL certification as part of the program. Scholarships
The John Hiss Memorial Scholarship
American Plains Co-op offers a scholarship to a senior in the Barton County or surrounding Counties. Applicants must attend Barton County Community College; show scholastic ability, financial need, leadership and citizenship. Special attention will be given to applicant pursuing an education in an agricultural field, but other applicants will be considered.
The Scholarship is for $1,000 per year for a full time student. It is renewable for an additional year at Barton County Community College at the discretion of the scholarship committee if certain criteria are meet.
Internships
Internships offer the opportunity for young people to spend time immersed in our organization. Interns get to participate in the daily activities of our full-time staff from across multiple departments. Typically positioned in Seed, Precision Ag, or Agronomy, interns will get to experience everything from scouting crops to assisting on sales calls, delivering seed and agronomy products, helping with our extensive test plot system, interacting with patrons, and many other activities. Interns will also spend time in each of our other departments in order to see how the cooperative works as a whole.
Each summer, we start our interns out with extensive training on the cooperative system through a program created by the Kansas Cooperative Council. At this training, our interns learn in depth about the cooperative system. Topics include: why cooperatives are formed, member benefits typically included, and about how the Kansas Cooperative Council is involved at the State level. Participants also get to visit and tour the Kansas State Capital in Topeka. This program is paid for as part of the internship experience.
Representatives from our cooperative attend multiple career fairs at colleges across the state to find qualified candidates for our internship program. These career fairs are a fantastic time to ask questions and learn more about what an internship with our company is all about.
